What we believe
We are a Bible-centred church who believe that the Bible's message is true, relevant and necessary for today.
If you have questions about the Christian faith or would like a simple explanation of what Christians believe you may find the following links useful.
Below is a useful summary of the key truths which the church upholds and teaches. We take these truths from the teaching of the Bible which we believe to be God’s word.
Statement of faith
The main statement of our beliefs is found in the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith, which shows how much we have in common with other Reformed churches. A shorter summary of what we believe is found below in the statement of faith of the Association of Grace Baptist Churches South East (AGBCSE).
We believe in the one true and living God, co-equal in three Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, who is invisible, personal, omnipresent, eternal, dependent on none, unchanging, truthful, trustworthy, almighty, sovereign, omniscient, righteous, holy, good, loving, merciful, long-suffering and gracious, the Creator of all things.
We believe that God made our first father Adam perfect, holy and upright. Adam sinned and as the representative and head of the human race brought upon himself and all his offspring death, condemnation and a sinful nature. As a result, it is utterly beyond the power of fallen mankind to have a saving knowledge of God, to love God, to keep His laws, to believe the Gospel, to repent of sin or trust in Christ.
We believe that God, before the foundation of the world, for His own glory chose an innumerable host of men and women to eternal life as an act of free and sovereign grace. This election was in no way dependent upon His foresight of human faith, decision, works or merit.
We believe that God’s Son died at Calvary to effect propitiation, reconciliation, redemption and atonement for His elect people. God bore testimony to His acceptance of His Son’s work by raising Him from the dead for our justification. He ascended to the right hand of His Father and is enthroned in glory, where He intercedes on behalf of His people and rules over all things for their sake.
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ shall come again to judge all people, to raise the dead, both righteous and unrighteous, and that the righteous shall be glorified and enjoy everlasting life and the wicked endure everlasting punishment.
9. Security of Believers
We believe that the elect, who are called by grace, are justified in the sight of God on account of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ which is received by faith alone. They shall persevere in holiness and enter into the joys of heaven.
10. Baptism & the Lord's Supper
We believe that a visible local church is a community of baptised believers who have covenanted together in the fellowship of the gospel and under the discipline of God’s Word. We believe in the necessity of baptism by immersion, into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, on a profession of repentance and faith in order to enter into church membership. The Lord’s Supper is a privilege of local church membership and is administered under the discipline and pastoral care of the local church.
We believe in church-based mission – that it is the responsibility and privilege of each local church to be obedient to Christ’s Commission to go into all the world, starting in its local area, and preach the gospel to all people, seeking to disciple and baptise believers, establishing them in local churches.
